Sangyi majored in English Literature and worked as an English teacher for six years in Korea. After moving to Minnesota, she taught pre-kindergarten children for over two years. She always wanted to pursue her career in education and helping children. She is a mother of two children. She accepted the position of a GEER Program Manager (Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Program which seeks to improve children's mental health in Korean American families in Minnesota) with KAM Center as well as teaching Korean conversation classes.
