Independence Movement Day
The 1st of March is a national holiday that recognizes the Sam-il Movement (Samil Undong | 삼일 운동). It commemorates one of the first displays of public resistance against the Japanese occupation in Korea.
March 1st Movement Day is usually celebrated by university students and other citizens gathering around City Hall waving Korean flags while shouting 만세! (manse). Some also go to Tapgol Park for a public reading of the Korean Declaration of Independence where it was first read in 1919.
